Louise Bullock

18 June 1999
Memoir by Michael Usey

For 86 years, Louise Bullock loved God, her family, and her church.  She had 3 children--Mark, Beverly, Jerry--6 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.  She loved them all.  Five years ago she moved to Tupelo, Miss., to be closer to her son, since she suffered from memory loss and dementia for the last 10 years.  But, before her move, she had lots of roots and memories here in North Carolina.

Born in Rowan Country, near or in Salisbury, she grew up in Winston-Salem.  Her father (and Rozette's and Edna's too) was a taxicab driver and later a bus driver.  Even as a child, Louise loved the outdoors, and played in nature all the time.  She had 3 sisters and 2 brothers, whom she watched play football, basketball, and baseball.  Later she would watch her sons and grandsons play sports too.  Louise wished her father had given her a middle name, so her dad called her "Louise Longtongue Young," just to kid her.

She and Rozette were especially close.  When Louise was old enough to date but Rozette (being 2 years younger) was not quite old enough, their father made Rozette go as a chaperon on Louise's dates.  She and her date would put Rozette in the rumble seat of the car and take off for a drive-in movie.  When Louise and Rozette were both older, they double-dated.  One time they dated brothers; Rozette's date drank too much, but since he was cute, she went out with him.

Louise was married at 20.  Her husband, whom many of you did know, died of complications from diabetes July 24, 1968.  She had other hard times too: her son Jerry died early.  This is a tragedy from which no parent fully recovers.

Louise was a very hard worker.  She worked for a long time at Mo-Jud hosery on Spring Garden Street.  Louise loved to talk a lot and loud.  For years she worked at Petey's BBQ on High Point Road (on the location where Toys `R' Us now sits.  She enjoyed chatting with people, since she was very social and friendly, and many people knew her by site--although she had a very hard time sell beer.  She lived near there on High Point Road, where a muffler shop now sits.  In fact, she and her sister had a little store in the house where there is not a triple-X film shop.  I'm sure it's changed a lot since Louise sold stuff there.  She moved from High Point Road to Dumont Court, where she lived for over 20 years.  There she welcomed people into her home.  Often she would kept people from out-of-town with her in her house.  One of her grand-daughters lived with her while the she attended college.

Louise laughed often and loudly.  She loved to crochet and watch television and talk.  She crocheted afghans for all of her family.  She also enjoyed yardwork.  She mowed her yard and coaxed her flowers into growing.  Louise relished fried chicken; it was her favorite meal.  Louise joined College Park in 1950, 49 years ago.  There she had lots of friends with whom she had lots of fun--setting up for Christmas parties and class get-togethers.

For all these memories and many, many more, we give thanks to God for Louise Bullock, for the way she loved God and her family and her friends, and for the way we saw God's incredible love through her.
