Week 5: Heaven’s Brass Section
Read Rev 8-9.
- Rev 8.1 says there was silence in heaven for half an hour. Why is there silence after all that praise?
- What happens immediately after the silence? What 2 objects does the other angel have?
- What rises and mingles with the smoke of the censer? What happens with the angel takes fire and throws it on the earth?
- What year did Vesuvius erupt, and what happened when it did? Could this be behind Rev 8.8?
- Make a chart based on Rev 8.7—9.21

- After the 5 th trumpet, how are the creatures described & what is their work? How are these creatures limited in their torture?
- Who is their king? Do the names Abaddon [Heb] or Apollyon [Gk] mean anything to you?
- What other numbers are introduced when the 6 th trumpet is blown? What are the effects of these woes on those who are not killed?
- How does it make you feel when you read about all the pain, suffering, and destruction in Rev? Does it bother you that Rev sees God in the eventual destruction of animals, plant life, and human beings?
- Does it seem strange to you that all this comes as a result of God’s judgment?
- What instruments of war have already been used the produce the kind of suffering described in Rev 9?
- Does it seem to you that some of the things described in these 2 chapters have taken place over and over? What has happened in your lifetime that relates to some of these?
Extra Credit: Do you think Dante borrowed images of Hell from Rev 9? Where do you see that in his writings?
