The Details
Sunday School (beginning at 9:45 am):
The 9-12th graders meet to discuss a variety of topics and biblical lessons in the Conference Room. Taught by Frank Kendall, the students are invited to reflect and discuss how the studies may apply to their current situations. Studies in the past have included a video series based on Joan of Arcadia as well as an in-depth look at the Book of Job.
The 6-8th graders meet on Sunday mornings using the Claim the Life: Journey curriculum series by Abingdon Youth. Lin Bunce, Jeremy Fox, and Amber Thomas help lead these students in discussing things such as Worship, Praying, Purity, Courage, and Celebrating the Journey.
Sunday Worship (11:00 am):
College Park 's youth are invited and encouraged to help lead in Sunday worship. Whether it is reading the scripture, voicing a prayer, leading the children's sermon or serving as usher, students are embraced into full participation of the church body. Students have served communion as well as participated in the benediction.
Youth-led worship is typically held near the beginning of May. This is a time in which the graduating seniors are given a time to speak and share, and the youth as a whole lead the church in worship.
Club Jésus(hey-zeus) ( 7:00-8:30 pm):
The Sunday evening youth group meeting is called Club Jésus. This meeting encompasses grades 6-12 and begins with a youth supper at 7pm in the fellowship hall (immediately following both youth handbells at 5:30 pm and youth choir at 6:15 pm). Activities include scheduled ministry nights, small groups, movie nights, fun nights and other such activities.
Ministry nights have included serving meals at the Greensboro Urban Ministry (GUM), assembling care packages for college students, writing notes to college students, yard work and preparation for church events.
Small groups vary in both content and demographic. Club Jésus is currently using the Revolution II series by Bluefish TV, which involves a range of topics such as anger, depression, families, and dating. Depending on the sensitivity of the issue, groups are split up by grade, gender or both. Youth sponsors help lead the small group discussions.
Movie nights and Fun nights vary. This is purely for the fellowship and hanging out aspect of Club Jésus. It is the proverbial downtime of the youth group.
Passport Youth Camp
The youth spend a week at the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship's (CBF) Passport Youth Camp during the summer. While not limited to this camp, it is one that provides a missions emphasis in which students go out into the community to participate in a variety of mission work. Locations and dates often vary from year to year based on need and logistics. The students have been to New Orleans as well as Charlotte with Passport. This year's trip will take them to Boston! For more information on Passport see the Passport website (www.passportcamps.org).
Other Events
The youth often have Spring and Fall Retreats. In the past, these events have taken the students skiing at Hawk's Nest as well as surfing at Myrtle Beach.
Other Miscellaneous events are scheduled throughout the summer, including a trip either to Carowinds or Emerald Pointe.
During the holiday season, students help serve in College Park’s annual Moravian Lovefeast, as well as participate in a Club Jesus Christmas Scavenger Hunt.
